If you suffer from psoriasis of the scalp you’ll understand just how frustrating and debilitating this condition is. Red, flaky, crumbly skin is unsightly and embarrassing – especially in such an obvious place as one’s hair!

A natural treatment for psoriasis is to use tea tree oil. It’s not a quick fix - you must be patient and stay focused on your treatment, but if you care about what you put on your skin and into your body then all-natural tea tree oil is the perfect choice to treat scalp psoriasis.

What is scalp psoriasis?

Psoriasis of the scalp is a skin condition that’s usually caused by the epidermis (outer skin) producing too many new cells very rapidly and then shedding them. The affected skin area doesn’t have the necessary time to process the amount of productivity, therefore resulting in flaking, red, scaly skin as a result of cells building up together.

Can tea tree oil really help to cure psoriasis?

Tea tree oil contains many natural healing elements – it contains antiseptic, antibacterial and antifungal properties. One of the compounds it contains is Terpinen-4-ol which has a very powerful effect on skin diseases, making it an ideal choice to treat psoriasis of the scalp.

Because tea tree oil is known to have anti-inflammatory effects, it will help control the over-production of skin cells that occurs with psoriasis. The antibacterial properties of the oil will help reduce any infection in the affected areas of the scalp.

Tea tree oil as a natural psoriasis treatment

If you suffer from scalp psoriasis you’ll most likely benefit from trying tea tree oil as a natural alternative treatment. Tea tree oil is distilled from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia plant which is native to Australia.

You can apply tea tree oil directly to the areas affected by the psoriasis, although be very aware as this can cause irritation. The best way to use tea tree oil to treat the symptoms of psoriasis would be to use a shampoo containing tea tree oil.

As with any type of alternative treatment, you should probably discuss with your doctor before proceeding. If your skin becomes irritated due to using tea tree oil, discontinue use immediately.

How to use tea tree oil for psoriasis

If you want to treat psoriasis of the scalp in a natural way then use pure essential tea tree oil. You can buy it from most drug stores, pharmacies, health shops and even some department stores.

You can buy shampoos that contain tea tree oil, however in my experience I’ve found it’s always best to buy a bottle of 100% pure tea tree oil and add it to a natural shampoo. It’s also much more economical to do it this way.

Make your own tea tree oil shampoo for psoriasis

Using a natural unscented shampoo as a base, simply add about 10 drops of tea tree oil every time you shampoo your hair. Let the shampoo sit in your hair for at least 5-10 minutes to allow the oil to work its magic For an even deeper treatment wash hair over a basin using tea tree oil shampoo, then cover with a shower cap and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse off thoroughly when the time is up.

Wash your hair using tea tree oil every day until you see symptoms start to reduce or disappear. Be patient when using this type of natural treatment - you won’t get results quickly but you will have the satisfaction of knowing you’re not using any harsh chemicals to treat scalp psoriasis.
