Tea tree oil is an essential oil extracted from the Australian Melaleuca tree. The oil’s antiseptic and antibacterial properties make it a super all-natural fighter against mold in your home.

It has quite a strong, medicinal odor and has been proven to be effective in removing mold and mildew from surface areas inside your home.

Make your own non-toxic mold spray using tea tree oil

If you’re concerned about using harsh chemical sprays to remove mold from your home, then have a go at making your own mold spray. Here’s how to do it:-

  • Combine 2 teaspoons of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water in a spray bottle.
  • Shake to mix, then spray directly onto mold or mildew spots.
  • Leave mixture visibly wet on these areas, and don’t rinse off.
  • Repeat as necessary.

Remaining mixture can be stored in the spray bottle for future use. Any mold problem areas are best kept well ventilated and exposed to sunlight as much as possible to deter the mold from returning.

Make your own mold cleaning products that contain tea tree oil

An alternative to using a spray bottle is to make up a mold cleaning solution using tea tree oil and using a rag or cloth to clean.

  • Using a bucket, make up a solution of tea tree oil and water using the ratio of 1 teaspoon of oil per 1 cup of warm water.
  • Dip a cloth into the solution, apply to the moldy surface and gently scrub the mold away.
  • No need to rinse afterwards.

You can use this solution on anything from walls, ceilings, rugs and shower curtains. Unlike harsh chemical bleaches, tea tree oil provides a safe, non-toxic mold removal remedy for you and your family.

Environmental benefits of using tea tree oil for mold removal

Tea tree oil is safe to use around your home – it is safe for you, your family and your pets. (Just remember it can be toxic if ingested, so store in a safe place if you have little ones running around.)

All cleaners eventually will end up in the waste water, so using a safe, natural oil such as tea tree oil is a much better alternative than washing out nasty chemicals out to sea.

Tea tree oil will also save you money - it’s quite a cheap oil compared to other essential oils. Making your own mold removal sprays or cleaners using tea tree oil is a much cheaper option than a lot of commercial chemicals.
